Targa Florio, the historic circuit at risk for the RFI project

A viaduct and a roundabout could change the face of the area called Floriopoli, which includes the pits, the grandstands, the timekeepers tower of the Targa Florio road circuit, the oldest car race in the world, born in 1906 at the behest of Vincenzo Florio and again in the sports calendar with the rally and the edition for historic cars. The plan alarms some mayors of the Madonie, who rely heavily on the integrity of the circuit for the revival of the tourist economy of the area and fear that the project will erase a piece of history. The new infrastructures are foreseen as part of the project on doubling the Palermo-Catania-Messina railway, whose approval procedures have accelerated with the Pnrr and the Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (Pniec). The works in the area, which falls within the Municipality of Termini Imerese, are foreseen in the part of the project on the Fiumetorto-Lercara Friddi section, 30 kilometers of double track. The municipalities affected by the work received the documents from the Italian railway network (RFI) on 21 January and will have to express their opinions within 90 days, which expire on 21 April. The observations to the request for Environmental Impact Assessment (Via) sent by Rfi to the Ministry for the ecological transition must be received even earlier, on 12 March. The works include the elimination of the level crossing at the intersection of state roads 113 and 120, with the construction of a viaduct which, from the area of the Sciara junction, crosses the Torto valley, crosses the river of the same name and the new railway line and ends close to Floriopoli where a roundabout, a new road and the consolidation of the ridge are planned. The impact of the new structures on the Torto valley, on the fertile agricultural land that compose it and on the historic motor track, had already alarmed the Municipal Council of Termini Imerese which, in 2004, had rejected a similar hypothesis proposed by Rfi in the context of of another project, that of speeding up the Pelermo-Agrigento section. In recent weeks the Municipality of Termini Imerese and the Metropolitan City of Palermo are thinking of a theme park in Floriopoli dedicated to motorsport and the Targa Florio. Furthermore, regional law 9 of 2002 includes the Sicilian race in the “historical-cultural heritage of the Sicilian Region, together with the three historical circuits: Piccolo (72 km); Medio (l08 km) and Grande (148 km) and the grandstands”. Recently the Region has placed a further constraint on the brand of the Targa.
