Shoichiro Toyoda, former head of the Japanese auto giant Toyota founded by his father, died today at the age of 97, the group announced in a brief statement. Toyoda died of heart failure.
Born on February 27, 1925, the eldest son of Kiichiro Toyoda – founder of Toyota – joined the company in 1952, gradually rising through the ranks and improving production quality control. To him we owe the industrial presence of the group on a global level, as well as its success in hybrid vehicles.
In 1982, his arrival at the helm of Toyota also marks the birth of the current group, with the merger of the commercial and production activities, which had been divided since the 1950s.
The successful integration of these two opposing branches was largely the work of Shoichiro Toyoda, who led the group for ten years before becoming chairman of the board (1992-1999) and then honorary chairman until his death.
