Ferrari SF23 evolution of the F175, focuses on aerodynamics

Aerodynamics, reliability and ambition. It is the triple A that characterizes the basic concepts of the SF-23, the Ferrari single-seater chasing the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship, after years of expectations and disappointments. The Rossa has an aggressive look, with lots of black in the lower part and on the wings, a sparkling red in the upper area and on the outside of the wings and the large Ferrari lettering on the rear one, but the undoubted dynamism it inspires will have to be translated into performance and this is why the winter in Maranello was one of great work and commitment, starting from the solid foundations of the 2022 car.
On the power unit front, the only interventions allowed by the regulations were on reliability, given that everything else was frozen, even in the smallest details. The head of the Cavallino power unit area, Enrico Gualtieri, explained that “all the data and signs of weakness of the components used” were examined and the assembly procedures were also reviewed” both for the internal combustion engine – 1600cc , 90-degree V6, 4 valves per cylinder, direct injection, single turbo – both on the electric ones. The Energy recovery system (Ers) has the hybrid energy recovery system through electric motor generators and according to the Ferrari technical data sheet the batteries lithium-ion batteries weigh 20 kg Battery energy: 4 MJ Power: MGU-K 120 kW MGU-K 50,000 rpm max; MGU-H 125,000.
The work on aerodynamics was much more in-depth, even if it was an evolution of the previous car, the F1-75, in particular focusing on the belly area, on the nose and on the front wing. The former are very hollowed out, with large grilles for heat dissipation, while the wing is characterized by a heavier profile in the central area, right next to the nose, which in turn extends up to the first flap. The set of interventions, underlined the CEO of the Cavallino, Benedetto Vigna, will ensure that the Ferrari SF-23 will be “a single-seater that will have no precedent in terms of speed”.
Now all we have to do is wait for the pre-season tests on February 23-25 in Bahrain, when there will be the first real confrontation between the Ferrari and its rivals, above all, obviously, Red Bull and Mercedes.
The interventions also concerned the set of suspensions – front struts (push-rod layout) and rear tie rods (pull-rod) – with a revision of the kinematic mechanisms. The aim is to reduce disturbance to aerodynamic flows but also to adapt to the characteristics of the new tires developed by Pirelli, which should in particular be more effective in reducing understeer and wear on the front axle.
