Chinese court agrees with BMW: hands off the Mini

Interrupting a long series of decisions in favor of local manufacturers regarding the intellectual property of car design, a Chinese court has ruled in favor of BMW, which had sued a company for counterfeiting that had deposited none other than the shapes and appearance of the Mini original from 1959.
This had not happened for 20 years, i.e. since General Motors had won a lawsuit against Chery, demonstrating (with the replacement of the doors of the two models) that the Daewoo Matiz – designed by Giugiaro – and its Chinese copy QQ were perfectly stackable.
In 2008 Fiat also ‘attacked’ the giant Great Wall by denouncing the counterfeiting of the Panda which became Peri in China. In that case, the court ruled only partially in favor of the Turin-based company, only forbidding the export of the Panda clone.
