In winter, in order to be able to circulate safely on snow-covered roads, it is also possible to opt for snow socks. In fact, since November a circular from the Viminale has recognized them as a “supplementary adherence device” and has prepared a ministerial decree which implements the Uni En 16662-1:2020 standard as a reference standard.
It is a regulation that specifies how the sock needs to be installed in such a way that it does not slip off during use; lead to an increase in adherence; and must have a rather limited additional bulk on the tyre. For the packaging, on the other hand, the following information must be reported: who placed the product on the EU market; the number of the standard; the type of product indicated in the certificate of conformity; the certificate number; and the accredited body that issued the certificate.
The socks, although useful in emergency situations, do not however replace the winter tire, and that, in the event of heavy snowfall and icy surfaces, if you do not have winter tires, it is preferable to mount the classic chains, to be used up to a maximum speed of 50km/h.
