Electric cars, few registrations in Italy in 2022

Based on the BEV – Italy Progress Index, deriving from the qualitative analysis of Quintegia, 2022 was a difficult year for electric cars in Italy, as can be seen from the 26.6% drop in registrations compared to 2021, despite a slight recovery in the last three months of the year. In our country, electric cars have a market share of 3.7%, decidedly low compared to the 12.1% average in the European Union.
The situation relating to infrastructure is different, due to the more than 6,000 installations carried out in 2022. Compared to 2021, charging points have increased by 46%, with a total of 19,334 elements. In addition, 378 more charging points were created on the motorway network in 2022. Direct current (DC) charging points account for 12%, but the share of DC points compared to 2021 has doubled. The ultra-fast ones, with a power exceeding 150 kW, instead tripled.
The Region in which the most electric cars circulate, and in which there are the highest number of registrations among private individuals, is Valle D’Aosta. The one best served in terms of infrastructure is Emilia Romagna, the most lacking from this point of view is Campania.
