General Motors patents a display that erases fingerprints

No more annoying fingerprints that appear on the touch screens of on-board systems when they are switched off. General Motors has in fact filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (Uspto) for an unprecedented type of self-cleaning display that should eliminate this drawback.
As reported by Autoevolution.com, the patent uses a photocatalytic coating and the effects of violet light to remove impurities deposited on the screen. Since neither the photocatalytic coating nor the violet light source are visible to the human eye, drivers – writes Autoevolution.com – will be able to amaze their passengers with this sort of ‘magic’ glass.
A closer reading of the patent (US 11,579,340 B2) explains that touchscreens with Led displays emit red light, green light and blue light which are visible. The purple light in the proposed self-cleaning unit comes from an invisible fourth LED. This reacts in the photocatalyst placed in the clear coat on the touchscreen along with the moisture in the air to clean the glass surface.
