A Continental display recognizes the driver’s face

A display with a driver identification system and which integrates a camera for measuring biometric parameters, to protect against car theft attempts. The innovative system is the one presented by Continental and the result of the collaboration with the partner trinamiX, wholly owned subsidiary of Basf Se.
The device consists of a display with a driver identification system, which integrates a camera for measuring biometric parameters. The new display was presented for the first time in Europe at the Mobile World Congress 2023 which closes today in Barcelona.
The display with driver identification system is the first display in the world in the automotive sector for the interior of the vehicle that allows contactless authentication with high levels of security and allows to prevent fraud and theft attempts.
The function is the one already known to all users who use facial recognition on smartphones and which, now, is also starting to make its way onto motor vehicles. Thanks to this solution, Continental and trinamiX, a leading company in biometric solutions, take the interaction between driver and vehicle to a new level.
The technology guarantees high car protection as the vehicle can only be started once the authentication of the person driving has been completed. The system can be particularly practical, for example in the case of digital payments via display for refueling, parking or toll payment operations, but also in the case of vehicle rental. The technology can also be used for payments in the App store or for accessing digital services.
Furthermore, the integrated camera can be used to monitor the driver’s level of attention in order to prevent potentially dangerous situations such as fatigued conditions behind the wheel.
Philipp von Hirschheydt, head of the user experience business area at Continental, said: “The secure identification of the users driving the vehicle is an increasingly important function on next-generation vehicles. Our display with fixed driver identification system new standards in terms of safety and comfort”.
