EU consumers, synthetic fuels the most expensive solution

The request to include in the regulation on CO2 emissions standards for cars and vans “a loophole for cars powered by synthetic e-fuels goes against the public interest, because it will be much more expensive than electric”. This is the position of BEUC, the European consumers’ association, on the provision which establishes 2035 as the deadline for the sale of new cars with internal combustion engines. In 2021, Beuc recalls in a note, the association had commissioned a study according to which electric cars are already today the cheapest option for those who travel many kilometers. “E-fuels are not a solution, as this technology is more expensive than electric cars, which is clearly the direction of travel for the automotive market,” comments BEUC director Monique Goyens. According to the BEUC study, “price parity” of cars powered by electro-fuels “with petrol cars is not expected until 2037 and in any case e-fuels will not be competitive with electric cars”.
