Von der Leyen, consumers at the center of electricity market reform

“Consumers are at the center of the reform” of the electricity market, as “one of the main objectives is to bring the advantages of low-cost renewable energy closer to consumers”. Thus the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in an interview with the press agencies gathered in the European Newsroom (Enr) project. The reform “drastically reduces the impact of gas on the price of electricity” explained von der Leyen, underlining the good functioning of the spot market, on the one hand, and the need to “improve long-term contracts”, on the other. The proposal, which introduces contracts for difference and energy purchase agreements, “is very well thought out and mature – she added – and is worth working hard to finalize before the European elections” in 2024.
