by Damiano Bolognini-Cobianchi Goodbye exasperated rigour, goodbye sobriety of lines sometimes misunderstanding with boring conformism, the VWs of the future will have a more captivating appearance than today’s, word of Andreas Mindt, head of design of the Wolfsburg House.
The new guiding principles of the German brand were illustrated by the number 1 of style, during the ‘Volkswagen – For the people’ event, in which the ID electric concept car was presented. 2all.
In the six weeks since its arrival, the imaginative pencil from Bingen am Rhein has imposed a decisive conceptual turning point in the design of the cars of the Brand, modeling the concept car just unveiled in record time. “It offers a preview – he underlined – of the new course, based on three pillars: stability, sympathy and enthusiasm”. Apart from some details still to be decided, such as the rear handles, the study presented – he clarified – is very similar in shape to the 25,000 euro EV car which will go into production in 2025.
This product will be at the heart of the VW offensive in the field of electric vehicles. Of the 10 ‘on tap’ innovations expected by 2026, three are scheduled for this year: ID.3, ID.
Buzz with long wheelbase and the ID.7 sedan. In 2025, in fact, it will be the turn of the compact car inspired by the ID. 2all. “Designing a 25,000 euro electric car was not easy – said the designer – but it was possible thanks to the new platform”, the Meb entry, which allows for significant savings in weight, cables and money.
Future models will fully express Mindt’s stylistic philosophy. In 2026 it will be the turn of a compact electric SUV. The lot also includes an EV worth less than 20,000 euros. All, the designer implies, will show off sympathy and elements of style dear to the tradition of the brand.
Joining Volkswagen in 1996, Andreas contributed his ideas to the designs of the first Tiguan and the Golf 7. In 2014 he moved to Audi as Head of Exteriors. In 2021, he assumed the role of design director of Bentley. From 1 February 2023 he returned to Wolfsburg to dictate the new course, as number 1 in style.
“We are ferrying the DNA of our icons into the future – he explained -. The ID. 2all also represents a tribute to the Beetle, Golf and Polo. The most important value for Volkswagen design – he underlined – is stability. A second key point of the brand is sympathy. Stability and sympathy are the two values that we have to satisfy 100%. We also want to arouse enthusiasm in our customers”.
“Liking – he commented – arises from the golden section, which is quite simply the ratio between three fifths and two fifths.
The characteristic line that descends below the base of the window is located exactly in correspondence with the golden section of the ID. 2all. The Beetle and the Golf have also always followed the principle of the golden section. The front of the ID. 2all, then, is characterized by the elements that stretch upwards. Well dosed, they form a captivating smile. For us – concluded Mindt, before unleashing an expression of happiness to 32 teeth, for a photo with his smiling concept – it is important that the face of the VW cars recalls a human expression”.
