Ferrari conquers the pole position in the 1000 Miles of Sebring which opens the 2023 WEC season. In Florida the new Hypercar of the horse, the 499P, set the best time in qualifying stopping the clock in 1’45″067 with Antonio Fuoco at the wheel, detaching the Toyota number 8 by 0″214. Thus, the Ferrari 499P number 50 will start in front of everyone, reconnecting the thread with history, given that 50 years have passed since the last time a “red” started in first gear position in the premier class of an endurance race.
Specifically, it was the 312 PB driven by Arturo Merzario and Carlos Pace in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1973. The other 499P, number 51, will start in fourth position, behind the two Toyotas, thanks to the timed lap by Alessandro Pier Guidi .
“Achieving pole position is truly incredible – declared Antonio Fuoco – I want to thank all the team involved here and who worked in Maranello for the extraordinary effort of the last 8 months”. “I’m happy for the team – added Alessandro Pier Guidi – we got a pole position with one car and a second row with the other, it’s an excellent start to the season”. Looking at the qualifying times in the other categories, it can be seen that all the Ferrari 488 GTEs competing in the LMGTE Am class achieved a placement in the top 10. The fastest, with the fourth fastest time in the class, was car number 83 of the Richard Mille AF Corse team led by the Argentine Luis Pérez Companc.
The other 488 GTEs will start, respectively, in fifth, seventh and tenth position.
The start of the competition is expected at 12 today, local time.
