Cars: De Meo (Acea), accelerate renewal of the vehicle fleet

“As fleet renewal is the most powerful tool to reduce both CO2 and pollutant emissions, we should look for ways to accelerate it.”

This was stated by Luca de Meo, President of Acea (EU car manufacturers association) and CEO of the Renault group, in view of the EU summit, in which EU leaders will address the issue of competitiveness. “European vehicle makers are facing a very asymmetrical challenge – he said – we are no longer leading the technology race and as incentives to purchase zero-emission vehicles decrease in the EU, we see massive support for our competitors in China and in the United States. All of this is happening in a context where overall European competitiveness is shrinking”.

According to Acea, some rules for the ecological transition of transport lack coherence, such as those foreseen by the Euro 7 standard. “It will add complexity and uncertainty to the key decisions and investments of European vehicle manufacturers, without bringing the environmental benefits it claims to offer”, explains the general manager of Acea Sigrid de Vries.
