New charging hub in Berlin designed by Audi

Audi has inaugurated its third charging hub. After Nuremberg and Zurich, for the realization of the recharging concept in Berlin, the brand with the four rings relied on a local partner, drawing energy from the existing grid. The neighboring FrischeParadies, Germany’s largest delicatessen market, is in fact a partner of the hub, with which it shares the supply line.

Equipped with automotive-derived batteries that have reached a second life, the Audi charging concept stores energy in its own accumulators only when FrischeParadies’ electricity needs are low. In doing so, thanks to the intelligent management of flows, the house with the four rings favors the efficient use of the electrical infrastructure. “Thanks to the dynamic control of the load – explained Elias Hammer, head of energy integration of the Audi charging hub in Berlin – we concentrate the energy needs of the hub in the hours in which FrischeParadies absorbs less energy from the grid.

“Berlin is a further declination of our charging concept – commented Ralph Hollmig, manager of the Audi charging hub project – and we aim to manage all the hubs in the most efficient and rational way possible. In the not too distant future, we will be able to real trading operations on the energy market, buying energy when it is more convenient or available in greater quantities”.

Thanks to storage using second-life automotive batteries, capable of storing 1.05 MWh of energy, Audi is building an ultra-fast charging infrastructure in places, such as the center of Berlin, where the electricity grid would not otherwise be capable of powering multiple HPC (High Power Charging) charging points with powers up to 320 kW. Similarly to what happened in Zurich, Audi adopts the compact version of the Audi charging hub in Berlin, with four covered charging points distributed over two PowerCubes.
