SVolt Energy aims at 5 lithium battery plants in the EU

Chinese battery maker SVult Energy Technology is set to expand its presence in Europe by building up to five plants, based on ongoing negotiations to supply automakers.

SVolt, spun off from BMW partner Great Wall Motor, already has two locations in Germany with a facility set to start supplying its lithium products to Stellantis NV from 2025.

The company aims to reach at least 50 gigawatt hours of production capacity in Europe by the end of the decade – according to reports from Bloomberg who interviewed Kai-Uwe Wollenhaupt, the head of SVolt Europe – enough to power up to 1 million electric vehicles.

Germany, France and Spain are the countries identified for the plants. “The battery industry in Europe is really taking off”, observed Wollenhaupt, for which “we could develop our sites even faster if we had more resources available such as land and skilled workers”. The real problems, at the moment, are the identification of the sites of the plants and the recruitment of specialized manpower.
