Unem, oil consumption up in March (+1.1%)

In March, Italian oil consumption amounted to almost 4.9 million tonnes, up by 1.1% (+51,000 tonnes) compared to March 2022. An overall result in line with expectations for contained growth, in where the increase in volumes of road, air and naval transport is mitigated by the decline in the petrochemical sector. Unem explains it in a note, specifying that petrol and diesel together, working days being equal, increased by 2% compared to the same month of 2022 (+52,000 tons).

The only ‘green’ one, continues the Unione Energie per la Mobilità, showed growth of 9.5%, confirming the prevalence of petrol engines, especially in the hybrid versions, in new registrations, while automotive diesel was substantially stable (-0.3%). The decline recorded in the extra-network (-5.3%) was partly offset by the network (+1.9%).

Aviation fuel recorded a further increase (+29.2%) confirming the recovery trend of both passenger and freight traffic.

For the month of April, the association of leading petroleum and low-carbon companies estimates “an improvement in overall consumption, supported by the mobility sector, positively influenced by the various holidays and by the trend, also noted in March, of a greater road traffic on holidays and days before holidays”.
