Spring bridges, 17 million Italians travelling

Botticelli’s Venus in a miniskirt, the virtual protagonist of the new campaign to promote Italian tourism which is also sparking some controversy, has not yet entered service in a few but for these spring long weekends Italy is already full of tourists, Italians but even foreigners. And in the airports there are hours of great crowding and overwork with the Fiumicino airport, for example, which registers a presence of over 100 thousand passengers a day between departures and arrivals. After the reassuring Easter result – according to the Federalberghi survey – there will be over 17 million Italians who will allow themselves a break between 25 April and 1 May. In particular, 9 million Italians will travel for the Liberation Day while 8 million and 99 thousand will travel for the workers’ day. The preferred destinations for travelers who will remain within the national borders will be the sea, the places of art and the mountains.

For those who will go abroad instead, the big European capitals win, followed by non-European capitals and the sea. The preferred accommodation will be the hotel followed by the house of relatives and friends. Among those who will not go on vacation, the majority revealed that they are not leaving for economic reasons. 18.7% of non-vacationers on April 25th and 16.5% on May 1st will leave in another period. Assoturismo Confesercenti also confirms the fever from 25 April in the survey carried out with Cst Tourism Studies Center: 5.2 million presences are expected in Italian accommodation facilities, given that it certifies the good health of Italian tourism and above all the triumph of the cities of art of the Belpaese, increasingly appreciated with an average saturation rate close to 90%. Central Italy is at the top of the preferences for the long term, with Umbria and Lazio marking saturation percentages of available rooms close to 90%. Followed by Liguria (83%), Tuscany (81%) and Veneto (80%). The survey by Confindustria Alberghi focuses more specifically on foreigners: there are numerous presences from Europe, French and German, English, Swiss and Spanish, but on the podium we always find American tourism which since the end of Covid has been generating exceptional numbers, well beyond the levels pre-crisis. But positive responses also come from other markets such as Brazil which is starting to move significant numbers again and from the first signs of a return from Chinese tourists. In terms of room occupancy this translates into over 90% occupancy in Venice, 85% in Rome followed by Florence with a good 75%. The result of Milan and Turin is also interesting with respectively 67 and 65% of the rooms booked. According to the Coldiretti/Ixe analysis, more than one Italian out of four (26%) has chosen to be a bridge.
The agritourisms are very popular, in some structures there are already sold out thanks to the desire to be outdoors in search of good food.
“The current results – says the president of Federalberghi Bernabò Bocca – suggest a good performance in the perspective of next summer. We will be cautiously watching, setting the course with full speed ahead”. And Vittorio Messina, president of Assoturismo Confesercenti, adds: “The growth phase of Italian tourism continues, but it tends to concentrate above all in some specific moments of the year. It is necessary to work together to welcome travelers 365 days a year”.
