In Sweden from 2025 roads for charging on the go

The world’s first stretch of electrified road will arrive in Sweden in 2025. The ERS electric road system will allow electric vehicles to charge on the go, allowing them to travel greater distances between visits to charging stations.
The highway chosen is the E20, located in the center of the main Swedish cities, Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. This will be the first part of a larger plan that sees over three thousand kilometers of Swedish roads getting the electric treatment. Sweden has been a pioneer in electrified road tests and has already experimented with three solutions.
In 2016, a two-kilometre stretch of road was opened in Gävle in central Sweden that used overhead power lines to allow heavy vehicles to recharge via pantographs. Subsequently, a 1.6 kilometer stretch of road on Gotland was electrified using charging coils placed under the asphalt. In 2018, Trafikverket introduced the world’s first charging rail over a two-kilometer stretch that allowed electric trucks to lower a swing arm to replenish electricity.
The inductive charging system placed under the asphalt works like the wireless charging of mobile phones. A charging plate is built under the road and electric vehicles recharge as they pass. The technology would extend the usable range of an EV and could also lead to cheaper EVs thanks to smaller batteries.
