Volvo Trucks tests hydrogen trucks on public roads

New milestone crossed for Volvo Trucks’ fuel cell electric trucks that have been tested on public roads. The vehicles are those presented last year by Volvo Trucks as trucks with zero tailpipe emissions, which use hydrogen to produce their own electricity on board and which can travel long distances.
Now the vehicles are being tested on public roads for the first time. To make the test even more challenging, the tests were conducted above the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden in extremely cold weather. “The trucks are operational seven days a week – commented Helena Alsiö, VP powertrain product management of Volvo Trucks – and in all weather conditions. The rough conditions of the roads in northern Sweden, where there is ice, wind and lots of snow, make an ideal test environment”.
Volvo currently offers the widest range of electric trucks in the industry, with six models in series production, with fuel cell electric trucks expected to be available from 2025. Testing with carriers will begin a few years before market launch.
To accelerate their development, the Volvo Group has joined forces with Daimler to develop and manufacture tailor-made fuel cell systems for heavy-duty vehicles.
