With artificial intelligence, there is a risk of price increases for motor liability

Artificial intelligence, which is creeping ever faster into every aspect of daily life, risks destabilizing the insurance market with negative consequences on motor liability rates charged to motorists. This is supported by Aiped, the Italian association of damage appraisers and appraisers, which brought the case to the table of Consap during a recent confrontation. “Artificial intelligence is gradually replacing the field activity of insurance adjusters – says Aiped – Today we are witnessing a real distortion of the concept of appraisal: the increasingly widespread use of remote systems, authority appraisals, video appraisals and even the growing use of AI (artificial intelligence) by insurance companies raises serious doubts about the compatibility of these operating methods with the regulatory framework which only allows registered adjusters to estimate damage. The dangers of these changes are not only for operators in the sector, but also for citizens and policyholders – denounces the president of Aiped, Luigi Mercurio – An appraisal carried out remotely or through AI, or conducted by unqualified operators, does not allow to precisely ascertain the complexity of a damage from road accident This means that, in the event of underestimation of the damages, the insured person will receive less compensation than he or she would be entitled to. In the event of an overestimation, however, the company will suffer a higher cost which will be passed on to end users through an increase in motor liability rates, which in recent months, as also certified by Istat, have started to grow again”. For Mercury, it is therefore “it is essential that the appraisal is the result of the verification, analysis and evaluation activities in order to certify the best repair technique, the quality of the repairs in a workmanlike manner, safety for the motorist, the correct quantification of the damage” .
