Automotive supply chain, investment opportunities in Algeria

The automotive supply chain is looking at investment opportunities in Algeria, linked to Stellantis’ decision to start the production of vehicles under the Fiat brand locally by the end of the year. The occasion was the Economic Forum on the development prospects of the automotive industry in Algeria, organized in Turin by Anfia and the Algerian Embassy in Italy. The president of Anfia Paolo Scudieri, the ambassador to Italy Abdelkrim Touahria, the minister of industry and pharmaceutical production Ali Aoun, the deputy minister of companies and Made in Italy Valentino Valentini, the CEO of Fiat Olivier François and the Gianna Pentenero, Councilor for Productive Activities of the Municipality of Turin. “The Fiat investment project is an opportunity to strengthen internal production of automotive components,” said Aoun, encouraging Italian operators to invest massively and to allow local partners to benefit from their experience and know-how. “Fiat will be the first brand to resume production in Algeria. This is thanks to a close partnership with the Algerian authorities. By the end of the year, it will resume production at the Tafraoui plant, which will reach a production capacity of 90,000 units in 3 years. And the The first model to leave the factory will be the Cinquecento, an icon car of Italy in the world”, explained Francois. “With Algeria we want to broaden the field of our long collaboration thanks to a solid partnership that allows us to fully exploit the potential for growth and to build bridges between the shores of the Mediterranean, thus stabilizing a region that for Italy and the “Europe is strategic. With the Mattei Plan, this government also aims to make Italy a privileged gateway and energy distribution hub, an objective that can be achieved thanks to our strategic relationship with Algeria” underlined Valentini.

Italy is considered a reliable and competent partner, while Algeria opens up very interesting opportunities as a hub for the export of vehicles in Africa and Arab countries, as well as to have good competitive conditions thanks to a lower energy cost compared to Europe and the countries of North Africa”, says Paolo Scudieri, president of Anfia. During the Forum in Turin, Ambassador Abdelkrim Touahria provided an overview of the Algerian automotive market and its comparative advantages for Italian investors and noted the shared determination of the presidents of the two countries to consolidate and diversify bilateral cooperation, as demonstrated by the growth in the volume of trade, official visits from both sides and the large number of agreements signed in the last two years, including in sectors not related to hydrocarbons.
