The first European champion of electric batteries was born in France

A European-wide gigafactory to allow our continent not to be crushed by giants like China on the electric battery market. France opens today in Douvin, in the north of the country, not far from the cities of Lille and Lens, the first large plant for the production of batteries for electric cars in France.

The initiative was promoted by Automotive Cells Company (Acc), the company owned equally by Stellantis, TotalEnergies and Mercedes, which some have dubbed ‘the Airbus of batteries’. Also expected at the continental-scale event are the Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso and the German Minister of Transport, Volker Wissing. Also present were the general manager of Acc, Yann Vincent, the general manager of Stellantis, Carlos Tavares, the general manager of Mercedes-Benzi, Ola Kallenius, the general manager of TotalEnergies, Patrick Pouyanné.Launched in 2020, Automotive Cells Company conceives and manufactures cells and modules for energy storage. These active elements are then assembled into batteries for use by car manufacturers.

The Gigafactory ACC of Douvrin is one of the projects supported by the French state within the framework of the strategy for the development of electric batteries and for the development of important projects of common European interest (PIEC). With the new technological development, the demand for batteries is growing rapidly and is expected to increase 14-fold by 2030. The Douvrin gigafactory is expected to start actively producing as early as 2024.
