Innengine E-Rex and Rex-B, in the future unconventional engines

The one patented by the Spanish start-up Innengine is an absolutely innovative technology that could revitalize the entire ICE engine sector for motor vehicles and light aircraft. The initiative was promoted by the giant Aramco and the technology was validated in the prestigious chair of engines of the Polytechnic University of Valencia.
The two prototypes that are the result of more than a decade of research, development and testing are called E-Rex and Rex-B and are engines that can be powered by any fuel – including hydrogen – which have their own combustion cycle and kinematics.
Among the most salient features, explains Innengine, there is its architecture with opposed pistons and a new camshaft with a balance of mass and performance never seen before.
The key to the Innengine engine lies in its incredible simplicity (it has up to 70% fewer parts than a conventional 4-stroke) and its performance versus displacement. Overall the weight and dimensions are halved.
The output of a 0.7-litre Innengine engine is equivalent to that of a conventional 2.8 4-stroke. In particular, the Rex-B has a specific architecture to compete in the market dominated today by 2-stroke engines and offers a displacement between 0.125 and 0.350 litres. The E-Rex, the most advanced version of the new technology, will be a 0.7-litre in its first application.
There are sophisticated technical solutions such as variable valve timing, variable compression and pre-combustion, technology identical to that of the current Formula 1. Rex-B will be ready to go into production in the fourth quarter of 2023. While for E-Rex the start of production is set for 2024.
