General Motors has decided to add automatic emergency braking as well as four additional active safety features as standard equipment for the entire 2023 range sold in the USA, ranging from electric vehicles to models with internal combustion engines and in all price ranges.
The initiative aims to meet GM’s previous commitment to make automatic emergency braking standard equipment on 95% of all new vehicles sold, including the latest arrivals Chevrolet Blazer EV and Equinox EV. . GM also specifies that the four active safety features added as standard equipment in most 2023 model year vehicles are Forward Collision Alert, Front Pedestrian Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning and IntelliBeam automatic high beam control.
“GM has gone far beyond the safety commitment we’ve made to our customers,” said John Capp, director, technology, strategy and safety regulations at GM, “for 2023 model year vehicles, with numerous safety that have proven to bring concrete results now supplied as standard”. “As we look forward to a future vision with zero accidents, zero emissions and zero traffic congestion, these technologies are significant building blocks with proven benefits for accident reduction.”
According to a study carried out in 2023 by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) in which GM safety devices were examined, it appears that automatic emergency braking, together with Forward Collision Alert, can reduce by 42% rear-end collisions.
