Enter the city center with your BMW which automatically switches to electric mode. The technology is the basis of the BMW Group’s eDrives Zones, active in 138 European cities and recently activated in 20 of these, including Copenhagen, Cambridge and Toulouse. In Italy, in addition to Milan, Turin and Rome where the service was already active, there are also Verona, Brescia, Florence and Naples. Over the next year, BMW eDrive Zones are expected to be activated in at least 30 other cities around the world. Within eDrive Zones, BMW plug-in hybrid vehicles automatically switch to purely electric driving mode as soon as they cross the boundaries of city-center areas.
Plug-in hybrid models therefore move locally without emissions, just like purely electric vehicles, and with low operating costs for driving in city traffic. The vehicle recognizes designated areas using geofencing technology and GPS. The automated eDrive function is available as standard in many current and all future BMW plug-in hybrids. Drivers are rewarded with bonus points for every kilometer driven using electric propulsion, as well as double points in the eDrive Zones, which they can redeem for top-up credit. Additionally, drivers earn bonus points when they charge their vehicle. The last 20 cities to be added are: Aberdeen, Bregenz, Brescia, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Copenhagen, Cork, Coventry, Florence, Klagenfurt, Lille, Matosinhos, Naples, Oeiras, Oxford, Sheffield, St. Polten, Toulouse and Verona.
