For a more detailed picture, we decided to monitor prices before and during the war for different breeds of dairy cows. An auxiliary tool in this was the announcement of the sale of animals on the OLX website.

To begin with, we focus on what dairy cows are, and what types of them exist. Note that such animals are bought specifically for the purpose of obtaining milk. There are at least 8+ types of them (yielding the most milk):

  • jersey;
  • Holstein;
  • Yaroslavl;
  • aishirskaya;
  • Dutch;
  • red Danish;
  • Tagil;
  • English.

It is on the breed that the pricing policy mainly depends, as well as on the availability of relevant documentation and the possibility of delivery to the buyer’s region.

In general, prices for dairy cows range from 15-30 thousand UAH. It depends on the above mentioned characteristics as well as the urgency. What happened to prices before the war?

To track price dynamics during 2021-2022, we monitored prices 6-8 months ago. For example, in the fall of 2021, a young dairy cow that had four calves was sold for UAH 18,000, another ad (published by the owner of the animal 8 months ago) refers to a dairy cow that “gives 20 liters of milk per day”, at a price of 16 thousand hryvnia.

In pre-war times (February 2022), Ukrainians sold dairy cows for up to UAH 30,000, in fact, as they do now. It is this amount for dairy cows that is most often found in ads. In general, prices both before the war and now depend on the urgency of sales, the quality of milk and its quantity (an indicator per day), the age of the cow and its breed.

How to choose the right cow?

The choice of a dairy cow must be approached with special care. It is important not only to have necessary documentationbut also inspection of the animal. When choosing a dairy breed, one should take into account the characteristics inherent in each variety. Five basic steps when choosing a cow:

  1. The documents. Look first cow papers. The veterinary passport must contain marks on the age, breed, dates and results of tests for leukemia, tuberculosis, brucellosis, mastitis.
  2. General state. It is better to have a veterinarian’s opinion, but you yourself can conduct a preliminary assessment of the appearance of the cow. Animal should look healthycalm, do not be nervous when stroking, move freely and do not limp when walking.
  3. Udder. It should be large, tub-shaped or cup-shaped with the same symmetrical particles. The skin is clean, without wounds and papillomas. It is advisable to look at it before milking to assess the size.
  4. The fat content of milk. Visually, the fat content of milk can be determined by looking at settled cream. To do this, 10 cm of milk is poured into a glass and left for 8-10 hours, after which the thickness of the cream layer is measured: 1 cm indicates 10% fat, and 1 mm is 1%.

Previously, we talked about why the current gas prices can be considered cosmic, and also wrote about whether farmers will be able to sow during the hostilities in Ukraine.
