Nuclear: Sogin transmits areas suitable for storage to Mite carta

Petrol, Sticchi Damiani:

(ANSA) – ROME, MARCH 16 – Sogin has transmitted to the Ministry of Ecological Transition the proposal for the National Charter of Eligible Areas (CNAI) to host the National Repository for radioactive waste and the Technological Park, in compliance with the scheduled times, i.e. in the 60 days from the close of the public consultation. This was announced by a note specifying that the CNAI was drawn up by Sogin on the basis of the results of the largest public consultation so far carried out in Italy on a strategic infrastructure for the country, launched on 5 January 2021 with the publication of the proposed National Map of Areas Potentially Eligible (CNAPI) and concluded on January 14th. The consultation, divided into 3 phases, specifies a note, was managed by Sogin “with the utmost transparency and completeness of information” and was attended by hundreds of directly interested parties.

The CNAI proposal that Sogin sent to Mite was prepared on the basis of over 600 questions, observations and proposals, for a total of over 25,000 pages consisting of deeds, documents, studies, technical reports and maps, presented in the course of one year following the publication of the CNAPI.

The law now provides that the Mite, having acquired the technical opinion of the National Inspectorate for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ISIN), approves the Charter with its own decree, in agreement with the Ministry of Sustainable Infrastructures and Mobility. The map will then be published on the websites of Sogin, the two Ministries and the ISIN.

The publication of the CNAI will therefore start the consultation phase aimed at gathering the non-binding expressions of interest, to continue the participatory process by the Regions and local authorities in whose territories the suitable areas fall, with the aim of reaching a shared decision of the site in which to create the National Deposit.
