Cruises: 7 million passengers in 2022 (+ 180%) but 2019 is far away

Italy and Germany:

Cruises continue to recover, continuing to recover volumes compared to 2020, the black year of Covid, and the forecasts for 2022 by Risposte Turismo, estimate this year’s passenger movements to be over 7 million (7.3 to be precise) with over 4,300 ship calls in more than 50 Italian ports. A growth of 180% on 2021, which closed with 2.6 million passengers handled, 304% more than in 2020, but the numbers are still far from the totals of 2019, a record year. According to the estimates contained in the Special Cruises report, in fact, 2022 could close with 39% fewer passengers and 12% fewer ships touched than the pre-pandemic figure. The consolidation of the recovery, “net of undesirable worsening of geopolitical problems or a pandemic resurgence” underlines a note from Risposte Turismo, is mainly driven “by a progressive return to operation of more ships and a higher filling rate of the same , which will scale in several Italian ports (some of which have been without traffic for two years) “.
The global estimates are positive after the collapse in 2021 to 3.6 million passengers (-50% compared to 2020, when they sailed at full capacity in the first months of the year, and -88% compared to 2019 when cruise passengers in the world nearly 30 million). Strong growth is expected in 2022, with almost all companies back active and supported by deliveries of new ships: between 2022 and 2027 78 new ships will be launched for 180,000 additional beds.
