Danieli: with Abs invests 400 million for green steel

(ANSA) – MILAN, APRIL 22 – The executive board of Acciaierie Bertoli Safau (Abs), subsidiary of Danieli, has approved the investment program for 400 million euros which, among other things, includes a new electric furnace, the Danieli DigiMelter, completely closed, automatic, driven by artificial intelligence and – we read in a note – essentially ‘net zero’ from an environmental point of view.

Danieli DigiMelter, says the Udine-based steel group, “is a milestone in steel history and replaces the conventional electric furnace. The ABS plant in Cargnacco, Udine, will be the first in Europe to use solar energy for smelting thanks to the ‘installation of approximately 160,000 square meters of panels on the roofs of the warehouses “.

With this investment Abs aims to be a front runner in the production of green steel. By May 2022, production is also scheduled for a line for the manufacture of high-quality spheres used for grinding minerals, a plant that will be “the most innovative and competitive of its kind in the world”, states Danieli.

The Friulian group has also started the feasibility study for the expansion of production at the Sisak (Croatia) site where a new rolling plant will be added to the existing steel plant for an investment of a further 200 million.

Abs’s goal is to produce 2.5 million tons of quality steel per year in green mode. Since its acquisition, Danieli has invested approximately one billion in ABS, in addition to the 600 million of the new program which will also generate 125 jobs for ABS technicians, plus approximately 250 external.
