The war with Russia took many Ukrainians by surprise. Probably, only a few paid serious attention to the reports of Western countries about a possible full-scale invasion of Putin’s troops in Ukraine and, having insurance contracts, supplemented them with such unusual additions as “military risks.”

The editorial staff of Segodnya tells how the work of insurance companies has changed due to hostilities and whether it is possible for Ukrainians to insure themselves because of the war.

How did the work of insurance companies because of the war

The vast majority of companies, according to the press service of the NBU, have been working online since February 24 to serve customers. Policy sales and claim settlement have also been streamlined.

Online, Ukrainians can buy most of the popular policies: “autocitizenship”, CASCO, foreign travel and even a “green card”, although before the Russian invasion it was issued only in paper form.

It is necessary to visit an insurance company only if it is a question of health insurance, because specialists must check the physical condition of the client.

In addition, due to the war, insurance companies more often offer customers deferred payments, settlement without calling the police, online insurance contracts even for those who are already abroad, as well as online medical consultations (when a diagnosis is made, expenses are compensated even abroad) .

Is it possible to insure yourself during the war?

Insurance of war risks, or rather, the risks of property damage, injury or death as a result of hostilities, was not widespread in Ukraine.

This is because military risks in insurance companies are not concluded in a separate contract, but are supplemented with standard ones. Decisions on such additions were usually made on an individual basis, if requested by clients. This practice is especially common among legal entities.

As Oleg Kovalenko-Kuzholny from INGO told Ukrayinska Pravda, they are contacted daily by Ukrainians because of crimes related to war risks.

“The main ones are theft, destruction of property due to the impact of explosive devices, damage by firearms and fragments of explosive devices. Due to the fact that such statements come mainly from war zones, it is now impossible to adequately make even a rough assessment of the damage”he said.

Interestingly, after the Russian invasion, the company stopped concluding contracts that cover military risks, the company noted.

“If someone will insure life against military risks, then a lot will depend on the region. Companies will most likely refuse, because Russia’s war against Ukraine is being waged without observing the Geneva Convention, that is, without rules”– one of the insurance brokers told reporters.

If we are talking about insurance of the life or health of the military, then among the companies there are hardly those who will try to take a risk and sign an agreement.

Even assuming that in order to form an insurance rate, it is necessary to make actuarial calculations (the number of all military, wounded, dead), and all data in a war are classified.

How to insure a car abroad

Ukrainians should take care of the insurance protection of their car immediately after crossing the state border. Because of the war, some European countries even offer free policies or take on insurance coverage for Ukrainian drivers.
