Timmermans, I don’t rule out new Recovery experience

(ANSA) – ROME, MAY 16 – “I have the impression that the Member States are open to a similar discussion, given the success after Covid of a common EU approach, and I do not exclude that we could repeat this experience”. This was stated by Frans Timmermans, executive vice president of the European Commission and commissioner for the European Green deal, answering Radio 24 to the question whether there could be a new European Recovery Plan on energy similar to the Next Generation EU launched during the pandemic.

As regards the payment of gas in rubles wanted by Russia, Timmermans explained that a similar hypothesis would involve the violation of the sanctions: “we have clarified this in recent days. And we have provided an explanation on how companies and Member States could act. Opening euro bank accounts is not a violation, but it can be used to circumvent sanctions. We need to make sure that sanctions are not circumvented and we have given instructions to states and companies. I hope companies will be able to work without problems. “
