Inflation reached 4.8% over one year in April, after 4.5% in March, INSEE said. This level has not been seen since November 1985 and is explained by the sharp rise in prices of almost all categories of products, energy in the lead (+26.5%). Leclerc, for whom inflation will continue to increase until it reaches “6 to 7% this summer”. For the president of the strategic committee of the Leclerc centers, it is therefore necessary that the distributors (Leclerc, Intermarché, Système U), the industrialists as well as the State take their share of responsibility to help the French. “Me, a distributor, I can only play on my margin or my negotiating capacity,” he said.

Take on its margins, or even pay less dividends … These are some of the solutions mentioned by the president of the strategic committee of the Leclerc centers to help the French. Provisions which are in reality only the continuation of what he has already put in place.

To compensate for inflation, Michel-Edouard Leclerc sold fuel at cost price when the price at the pump broke records. This offer made it possible to make motorists pay the price of petrol or diesel by having withdrawn the amount of the store’s margin, the famous 18 cents per litre. Other consumer aid: the baguette at 29 cents and student meals at one euro. “I advocate targeted aid, I prefer that we give more money to those who need it most,” he says.

Earlier this month, the president also launched an inflation shield guaranteeing that the price of 120 items would not change from May 4 until July. “We have 18 million consumers, we want to pamper them,” he says. In a column published on Sunday in the columns of Sunday newspaperhe also pleaded for the creation of a Ministry of Consumer Affairs to protect the interests of consumers.
