A new cynical scheme: how scammers make money on the grief of people

During the war in Ukraine, scammers come up with new and new schemes with the help of which they lure personal data and money out of people. And now they are cashing in on the families of servicemen who were captured or considered missing.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine warned about the dangerous scheme.

What is the essence of the scheme

Relatives of the military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine began to receive calls from unknown people from suspicious numbers, as well as to send messages. For money, they offer to give information about a person who is in captivity.

“Using the emotional state of relatives and friends, the attackers make phone calls from hidden numbers and offer to “provide information” about the military and “facilitate release from captivity” for a monetary reward. – the message says.

In addition, attackers beg people for information, hiding behind the specification of data.

However, the General Staff emphasizes that neither representatives of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, nor other military authorities or state institutions collect money from the families of prisoners or missing persons. In addition, release from captivity does not occur through a ransom.

“The issue of the release of prisoners of war is in the exclusive competence of state authorities. There is no collection of funds from family members and relatives,” – noted in the press service.

How else to make money during the war
