In 2021, the typical Italian host earned just under a fifth (18%) of their annual family income, an important figure to make ends meet. 31% said one of the reasons they host is to have an income to help them meet the rising costs, and half said they used the money they earned by hosting on Airbnb to cover some basic expenses, such as related expenses. to food and other necessities that have become more expensive. Almost one in two (48%) said that the money was useful to be able to stay in their home, while 64% used this income to improve the property.

Another aspect not to be forgotten is the opportunity in terms of the absence of a “gender gap” as regards hospitality: in Italy, 57% of the sample of hosts replied that they were women.

The destinations that recorded the greatest growth in bookings in Italy for the summer of 2021 (compared to summer 2019) are located outside the major urban centers. Globally, in the first quarter of 2022, the 10 most frequently booked cities accounted for 8% of revenue, down 12% compared to the first quarter of 2019.
