The cost of buckwheat, for obvious reasons and given the current economic situation in Ukraine, will continue to grow. The cost of a kilogram of the product can be higher than 100 UAH.

This was stated by the financial and economic observer Bogdan Slutsky – reports Today.ua.

So, as you know, buckwheat in Ukraine has long been a kind of indicator of the crisis.

What is the reason for the rise in prices?

There are three reasons for the price increase:

  • war and reduction of sown areas;
  • shortage of buckwheat in previous years. Farmers have always preferred other grains from which large profits could be squeezed out. That is, in addition to its own buckwheat, the Ukrainian market met the needs of the population also through imports;
  • reduction in overseas supplies.

So, before, buckwheat came to us regularly (recall, some of it was from Russia, but by roundabout roads through Kazakhstan, another one was from Belarus, and a little more was from Kazakhstan itself). Now Ukraine is left alone with its “buckwheat” problems.

How much will a kilogram of buckwheat cost?

According to the expert, this year Ukraine will be able to collect approximately 20 thousand tons of buckwheat, if necessary, at least 100 thousand tons.

“Such a huge deficit (more than 80,000 tons) is nowhere to be imported from, therefore, given the high demand for it and low supply, prices will continue to rise … and in the near future we will see price tags of more than 100 hryvnia per kilogram,” – predicts Slutsky.

Note that since the beginning of 2022, the price of buckwheat has increased by 32%. Now the average cost of a kilogram of this cereal is 62 hryvnia. But already now in some places on the shelves of supermarkets you can find buckwheat 80-90 hryvnia per kg.

ATB introduced a restriction

ATB supermarkets introduced restrictions on the sale of salt and sugar. Now it is impossible to sell more than 5 kg of sugar in one hand, the same applies to salt – no more than two packs.

The network has set such a limit according to the latest events in Ukraine and huge hype around salt deficiency, which, due to panic, Ukrainians began to massively buy.

At the same time, Serhiy Demchenko, director of the ATB All-Ukrainian Charitable Foundation, said that the restrictions are temporary until the situation with food rush and purchases normalizes. After all, some buyers buy heavily for future use or buy from ATB, and resell at exorbitant prices, taking advantage of the panic.
