The lack of buckwheat on supermarket shelves is a consequence of increased demand, and with a new harvest, Ukraine will be able to provide itself with this product.

Svetlana Lytvyn, an analyst at the Ukrainian Agrarian Business Club, is convinced of this.

According to her, in 2021 83% of the total consumption of buckwheat was ensured by the Ukrainian harvest – this is 106,000 tons. Another 22 thousand tons were imported into the country.

Since buckwheat is popular for the most part in the countries that were once part of the USSR, they are traditionally the exporters. Ukraine bought the most cereals in Russiabut the volume has decreased every year.

Another major seller of buckwheat is Kazakhstan. Partially, this type of product is also consumed in China accordingly, if necessary, buckwheat can be bought there.

“Most likely, Ukraine will be able to provide for itself. As of May 26, 57,700 hectares of buckwheat have already been sown – this is 70% of the sown area in 2021”– said Svetlana Litvin.

She added that the sowing campaign is still ongoing, so we can hope for big numbers. In addition, planting rates in 2022 are also higher compared to the previous year.

What products will become less?

Russian invaders temporarily took over the Kherson region, where Ukrainian farmers grew a wide range of popular products. Consequently, consumers may be left without a number of vegetables that are illegally exported to the Crimea and sold at a low price.

According to local publications, due to the inability to sell vegetables in the Kherson region, their prices have fallen to unprecedented levels. The following rates have been fixed:

  • young cabbage was sold 10 UAH;
  • radish 3 UAH;
  • cucumbers 10 UAH per kilogram.

it 3-7 times cheaperthan in the territories controlled by Ukraine. Increase production Kherson crops are now being tried by farmers from the western regions, primarily tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and onions.

Most likely, this season will have to buy more imported products, which will immediately affect prices, such vegetables will be at least twice as expensive. Also in the summer Ukrainians can stay without watermelons and melonstraditionally grown in the Kherson region.
