In May 2022, the Russian passenger car market continued to free fall as the local population buys fewer cars.

According to Russian media, citing an analytical agency, compared to April, which was also a failure, they bought 2% fewer cars, and compared to May 2021, the drop is -78%.

These are the data on the calculation of market volumes in accordance with the number of initial registration of cars in the country. In total, 27,458 new cars were sold in May.

What do they buy from Russia?

More than half (56.5%) of all sales were cars of brands:

  • Lada (6656 units);
  • Kia (3576 units);
  • Hyundai (3097 units);
  • Renault (2183 units).

Chinese Chery climbed into the top five, which was bought 1661 times in May. Russians are increasingly buying goods from China. In particular, other Asian brands – Haval (1220 units) and Geely (905 units) – entered the top ten most popular cars in terms of purchases. In addition to them, they also bought Nissan (1233 units), Skoda (1095 units) and Toyota (870 units).

General statistics also show that sales of commercial vehicles in the Russian Federation have collapsed by half. We mainly bought medium and large trucks (4284 units), LCVs (3079 units) and buses (816 units). This is 58% less than in May 2021.

Security requirements removed

In May, the Russian car industry was left without important passenger safety elements – new cars were allowed to be produced without airbags and anti-lock brakes.

According to the order of the Russian government, the permission to produce such cars is valid until February 1, 2023. Car factories can produce products of any environmental class, even Euro-0.

The requirements for crash tests of cars in Russia have also changed. In particular, only a frontal impact into a concrete block without overlaps will remain an obligatory element of testing.

Segodnya used to say that Western sanctions blocked the delivery to Russia of important equipment needed to assemble cars. At the same time, prices for the remains of imported cars in the Russian Federation broke world records – high-quality cars are sold to the population at exorbitant prices.
