(ANSA) – ROME, JUN 04 – World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5, and this year marks the 50th anniversary of the birth of this “global campaign” established by the United Nations in 1972 in Stockholm, on the occasion of the first UN Conference on the Environment, in which the Declaration was adopted which defined the 26 principles on the rights of the environment and the responsibilities of man for its protection.
The day is organized by the United Nations Environment Program (Unep) and each year has a specific theme and a new host country: this year, like 50 years ago, they are Sweden and ‘OnlyOneEarth’ (SoloUnaTerra), for reiterate the need to live in a sustainable way and in harmony with nature since resources are limited and must be safeguarded. Basically, we are asked to protect our planet, to take care of our common home, in our daily actions by the way we eat, live, work, move, invest.
After two days of work between Member States and stakeholders, in Stockholm, ten recommendations emerged: – to place human well-being at the center of a healthy planet and prosperity for all, recognizing that a healthy planet is a prerequisite for peace, prosperous societies; – recognize and implement the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment (realizing the vision articulated in principle 1 of the 1972 Stockholm Declaration); – adopt a generalized change in the way our current economic system works to contribute to a healthy planet; – strengthen national implementation of existing commitments for a healthy planet; – align public and private financial flows ;; with the environmental climate and sustainable development commitments; – accelerate system-wide transformations of high impact sectors, such as food, energy, water, buildings, construction, manufacturing and mobility; – rebuilding relationships of trust to strengthen cooperation and solidarity; – strengthen and reinvigorate the multilateral system; – recognize intergenerational responsibility as a cornerstone of sound policy making; – carry forward the results of Stockholm + 50.
