Understanding: penultimate Italy in the EU for working women

The pandemic has widened Italy’s delay in women’s participation in the world of work. In 2021 the female activity rate (active percentage share of the total population) stood at 55.4%, against 68.5% of the European averagein the penultimate place of the ranking with a value higher only than Romania.

This is what is highlighted by the analysis ‘The challenges of the economic scenario: innovation and human capital’, by the Studies and Research Department of Intesa Sanpaolo, presented during today’s meeting, Monday 13 June, at 5 pm – in live streaming on the Intesa Sanpaolo and ANSA.IT websites – and dedicated to the winning and finalist SMEs of the Intesa Sanpaolo Women Value Company award.

The survey conducted between March and April of around 600 companies shows greater resilience during the pandemic on the part of the companies applying for the award, also thanks to more qualified human capital and the propensity to invest in innovation. 66% marked an increase in turnover and a margin higher than the median of the sector and dimensional class to which it belongs.

“Although the war in Ukraine has further increased uncertainty and worsened expectations on demand trends – reports the study – the companies in the sample with more advanced profiles in terms of attention to inclusion and innovation show better growth prospects “. In 62% of cases they have better expectations for the current year on the turnover trend. “Human capital and innovation are confirmed as the main levers to face the current competitive context and overcome the difficulties, in particular, in terms of managing commodity pricesdelays in procurement and transport costs and unavailability of raw materials and semi-finished products “.
