Caro-vita, Coldiretti: over 8 billion at the table (ANSA)

Today the wheat harvest begins in Italy, and the production this year is estimated down by 15% due to drought which has cut yields from the North to the South of the country. This is what emerges from an estimate by Coldiretti disclosed on the occasion of the start of threshing that begins in the southern regions, where the first durum wheat grains were harvested in Puglia, the region where the greatest national production is concentrated.

In the north from Emilia Romagna to Veneto, Coldiretti points out, a decrease of around 10% is expected, while for the central regions the decrease could amount to 15-20%. But in the South, a lower harvest is expected between 15 and 30% .

As a result of the reduction in yields due to climate change, the overall harvest should be around 6.5 million tons nationwide on a total area of 1.71 million cultivated hectares.

The situation is also worrying at the international level, with world grain production for 2022/23 estimated to drop to 769 million tons. This is due to the reduction in Ukraine, with an estimated quantity in the country of 19.4 million tons, about 40% less than the 33 million tons forecast for this season.
