Numismatist’s dream: what surprised the British Royal Mint (photo)

The British have released several commemorative coins with a special design that will surprise collectors

On June 21, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge celebrates his birthday. The second candidate in line for the British throne is 40 years old.

According to the Royal Mint of Great Britain, on the occasion of the anniversary, commemorative coins with a portrait of the birthday man were prepared.

The reverse shows a portrait of Prince William, the number 40 and his initial – the letter W with a crown above it.

On the obverse you can see the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the corresponding inscription.

On the edge of the coin is the inscription: “His Royal Majesty, the Duke of Cambridge”.

Sales features

The commemorative coins are available in two variations – a silver one with a face value of £5 (UAH 182) and a gold one with a face value of £200 (UAH 7,200) with a similar design, but in limited quantities. Connoisseurs will also be able to buy a festive set of a new gold coin and a 1982 sovereign, issued in the year of the Duke’s birth.

The cost of gift sets starts from 13 pounds (472 UAH) for one silver coin and reaches 1,300 pounds (47.1 thousand UAH) for a gold coin and a sovereign.

Thomas Dougherty worked on the engraving of the prince’s portrait. He noted that the commemorative coin is designed to strike a balance between the prince’s energy as a young father and his royal status.

The coin is also unique in that it is the first official design to feature only Prince William. Prior to this, the Royal Mint minted coins depicting a young couple, Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Vatican Exclusive

In early June, on the 100th day of the war in Ukraine, the Vatican issued a themed exclusive silver coin. All money received from the sale will be sent to support the Ukrainians.

According to Andriy Yurash, Ukrainian Ambassador to the Vatican, this is a real gesture in support of the country that suffered from the Russian invasion. The coin weighs 23 grams and is sold for 50 euros each.

Segodnya previously wrote that silver investment coins with a face value of $1 with Ukrainian symbols appeared in the United States, and they also talked about American commemorative coins with a portrait of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
