Thomas Dougherty worked on the engraving of the prince’s portrait. He noted that the commemorative coin is designed to strike a balance between the prince’s energy as a young father and his royal status.

The coin is also unique in that it is the first official design to feature only Prince William. Prior to this, the Royal Mint minted coins depicting a young couple, Prince William and Kate Middleton.
