Ukrzaliznytsia has successfully completed testing of a pilot project to install Starlink on trains.

As Yury Shchigol, head of the State Service for Special Communications, said in an interview with Liga.Tech, they plan to launch satellite Internet on trains by the end of 2022.

During tests on the railway, Ukrainian specialists contacted colleagues from Starlink and showed them how they use the innovation from Elon Musk.

According to Yury Shchigl, according to the technical characteristics, satellite Internet should not work at such speeds. However, the Ukrainian railway workers managed to complete the experiment successfully.

Starlink in Ukraine

In early June, the Ukrainian company Starlink Ukraine (“Starlink Ukraine”) received a license from the operator. In our country there will now be a representative office of SpaceX.

According to the Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine Mykhailo Fedorov, the company has become the first number in the Register of providers of electronic communication networks and services.

Starlink is a global satellite system. It provides high-speed Internet in places where it was not available. For this, more than 1,500 satellites are in orbit around the planet Earth.

To access such Internet, a ground station is required. This is a special dish that is installed in a place where nothing interfered with the signal, for example, on the roof. Next, the dish is connected to a Wi-Fi router using a special cable and is controlled using an application on a smartphone.

After the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, Ukraine received a “green light” from Elon Musk to use the latest technology. We received 12 thousand Starlink terminals from different countries, companies and organizations.

Satellite internet has helped stabilize the country’s telecommunications infrastructure, which is being systematically attacked by Russian hackers during the war. During the period of martial law in Ukraine, everyone can use the system.

“Today” previously wrote that the mobile operator Vodafone suddenly raised tariffs from July 1, and also talked about the increase in tariffs for the transportation of goods by Ukrzaliznytsia.
