Istat: North drives GDP growth, more employed in the South, + 1.3%

(ANSA) – ROME, 01 JUL – “In 2021 the economic recovery was more marked in the areas most affected by the 2020 crisis. Against a national average of + 6.6%, the Gross Domestic Product grew in volume by 7.4% in the Northwest and 7% in the Northeast “, according to an Istat report.

The increase in GDP was less pronounced than the average in the Center (+ 6%) and in the South (+ 5.8%), despite the fact that the best performance for construction was recorded in the latter area (+ 25.9%) and agriculture (+ 3.6%). The recovery in employment was also characterized by greater dynamism in the South (+ 1.3%) compared to the rest of the country.

Employment growth was + 0.5% in the Northwest, + 0.2% in the Northeast and + 0.3% in the Center.

Driving the recovery in the Northern areas was Industry in the strict sense (+ 12.8% in the North-West and + 13.1% in the North-East) and Construction, which recorded growth of 22.8 % in the Northwest.

“In terms of employment, construction is the most dynamic sector, especially in the South (+ 11.1%), while in the Center it marks the smallest increase (+ 2%)”, reads the report Preliminary estimate of GDP and territorial occupation.

Employees in financial, real estate and professional services also grew, with the best results in the Center (+ 2.3%) and in the North-East (ANSA).
