(ANSA) – TRIESTE, 06 JUL – Explora Journeys, luxury travel brand of the Cruise Division of the MSC Group, and Fincantieri, have announced the signing of a memorandum of agreement for the construction of two additional hydrogen-powered luxury cruise ships , thus bringing the total number of the fleet from four to six units.
EXPLORA V and VI will feature a new generation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) engines, thus providing an answer to the issue of climate-altering emissions, and will also be equipped with industry-leading environmental technologies and solutions, including a liquid hydrogen collection system that will make it possible to use this low-carbon fuel. The hydrogen fuel will power a six-megawatt fuel cell to produce emission-free power for operation from hotel areas and allow ships to operate “zero emissions” in port, with the engines off.
The two new buildings will enter service in 2027 and 2028 respectively.
Explora Journeys also announced that the previously announced ships, EXPLORA III and IV, will now be powered by LNG. The two units will be enlarged by 19 meters to allow the installation of a new generation system based on LNG and hydrogen. (HANDLE).
