Due to the occupation of Ukrainian lands by Russia, for some time there were fears that this year there would be a shortage of fruits and vegetables in Ukraine, in particular watermelons. However, experts say that there will be watermelons in the markets, but prices will also be high.

Where will we get them from and what amounts to expect, Ivan Grigorovich, an analyst at the Stolichny market, told the Horticulture in Ukrainian magazine, reports agronews.ua.

Ukrainian watermelons are threatened with imports

As Gregory explained, imports can replace Ukrainian products. In particular, watermelons will be imported from Iran, Turkey and Azerbaijan. Since there will be no products from Kherson, we can see Odessa. But it will be much more expensive than imported watermelons.

“If an Iranian watermelon wholesale costs 20 UAH/kg at the beginning of the season, this is already a wake-up call, because this is a good price. Turkish watermelon initially cost 45 UAH, but now it has gone to 20-25 UAH/kg. But how will ours cope with such competition, it is difficult to predict how quantity and supply compensate,” Grigorovich explained.

At the same time, the farmers of the Odessa region argue that even if there is a good harvest of watermelons, grapes, cherries, then it will be difficult to take it to other areas due to logistics.

However, Grigorovich noted that it is possible to find resources. The only question is how much it will raise the price.

Do we have enough food this year?

Earlier, Segodnya wrote that in the conditions of a full-scale war between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, a shortage of vegetables and fruits is not expected. The Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine explained that this year the regions that did not fall under the occupation of the Russian Federation planted more vegetables.

Thus, the deficit will be completely covered by crops from the central, western and northern regions. As for fruits, there has always been their overproduction in Ukraine. Therefore, there will be no problems with them this year.

We also talked about when you can expect cheaper vegetables and what happened to the prices of popular vegetables in June.
