The high prices cut the food expenditure of Italians which is down in quantity by 2.8% compared to the same period of the previous year. This is what emerges from the Coldiretti analysis on Istat data relating to retail trade in May, which on an annual basis show a decrease in quantities purchased for the fifth consecutive month. The positive result in value is due exclusively to the increase in prices for foodstuffs which increased on average by 8.8% compared to the same month of the previous year, according to Coldiretti’s analysis of Istat data in June.

From + 68.6% of seed oil to + 13.4% of ice cream, the increases in energy and production costs fueled by the war in Ukraine are affecting the prices in the shopping cart. The price increases for butter with + 27.7% and flour (+ 20.5%) also stand out, driven by increases in wheat which also affect pasta (+ 18.3%). Margarine (+ 16.8%), chicken meat (+ 15.1%) and rice also rose, with ten thousand fewer hectares sown due to the drought that is also cutting crops. In contrast, Coldiretti underlines, low-cost food purchases are flying with food discount stores that show + 9.8% in sales in value.
