On the last day of the summer sales, the results are not good, it’s even a disaster in the clothing stores. After four weeks of promotions, this sector recorded a loss of 10% compared to the 2019 summer sales, the reference year for the profession. Fortunately, e-commerce enhances this balance sheet.
The summer sales end on Wednesday with poor results in clothing stores. After four weeks of promotions, managers need to clear inventory. Has the Covid effect definitively turned the page on traditional sales? If the clothing sector recorded a loss of 10% compared to 2019, the textile sector in e-commerce recorded a 60% increase in its turnover.
Bargain hunting… on the Internet
Since the health crisis, the French have increased their online purchases and the trend has not been reversed. “This is explained by a very sharp drop in in-store traffic, since it is one in five customers who did not come to the store compared to the 2019 sales”, explains Yohann Petiot, general manager of the Alliance du commerce. .
“This is extremely important because we are witnessing a lasting transformation of the purchasing behavior of our customers”, he adds.
Surprisingly, whether online or in-store, the sector that is doing the best is not the one we expect. “Women’s and footwear products suffered more than men’s during this sales period. Again, this is a behavior that we found in the first six months of the year which is confirmed during the sales”, explains Yohann Petiot.
Despite strong growth, the weight of online sales is not enough to make up for in-store losses.
