(ANSA) – ROME, 02 AUG – Agreement between the international organization for the protection of animals Humane Society International and Iata, the association that brings together 290 airlines representing about 93% of world traffic, for the transport of animals in crisis situations, after many fleeing citizens had to abandon their pets due to the conflict in Ukraine due to the impossibility of taking them with them.

The two organizations, reads a statement, have drawn up a list of recommendations for governments and the air transport sector with the aim of facilitating the safe transport of pets, such as dogs and cats, that evacuate or take refuge. in third countries with their owners.

The recommendations are based on IATA’s “Live Animal Regulations” which represent the global standard for the safe and compassionate air transport of animals and are listed below.

– Introducing flexibility on required documentation: governments are recommended to relax veterinary documentary requirements for the transport of dogs, cats and other companion animals; – assessment of ground-based accommodation facilities: airports are recommended to identify additional spaces in accordance with the safety requirements for the care of live animals; – provision of information: interested parties are recommended to update their communication materials to provide clear and consistent information to pet owners across all customer service channels, including call centers, email communications and chat and on social media profiles; – collaboration with companies specialized in the transport of animals and with producers of transport cages: it is recommended that airports seek the help of these realities to make available additional containers for the transport of live animals (in the cabin and hold) in the main starting points.
