Eurostat, new businesses are down, Italy -5.2%, more bankruptcies

New business registrations in the eurozone decreased by 2% in the second quarter of 2022 compared to the previous quarter. In the EU, they fell by 1.2%. The decline follows a contraction seen already in the first quarter (-2% in the euro area and -2.3% in the EU). In Italy, the registration of new businesses fell by 5.2% in the second quarter (-3.5% in the first). The statistics office of the EU, Eurostat, estimates this.

As for bankruptcy filings, they increased again for the fourth consecutive quarter. The increase began in the third quarter of 2021, after a significant decline of 11% in the second quarter of 2021 compared to the first quarter of 2021. The most recent data shows that in the second quarter of 2022 bankruptcy declarations increased by 2.2% compared to to the first quarter of 2022.

The number of business registrations in the first two quarters of 2022 remains higher than in the pre-pandemic period of 2019.
