On Friday evening, the Eiffel Tower was plunged into darkness for the first time at 11.45 p.m. instead of 1 a.m. A measure which is part of the energy sobriety plan announced by the mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo but which worries the traders in the area.

The capital is no exception, it is also time for energy savings. From the buildings of the town hall of Paris to the signs of the Champs Élysées through the historic buildings, Paris plunges into darkness. The Eiffel Tower is no exception to the rule either and now turns off at 11.45 p.m. instead of 1 a.m., but for the businesses in the area, this is not necessarily good news.

The Eiffel Tower turns off an hour earlier

Seated on a terrace in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, a few friends have a drink with a view of the Eiffel Tower, lights off, and are divided on the subject. “It’s a shame”, “11:45 p.m. it may be a little early”, “I don’t particularly mind”.

The best-known of Parisian monuments drops its light suit 1h15 earlier than normal. For Thomas, manager of this Parisian bar, this will undoubtedly change certain habits. “Maybe we will have fewer customers, maybe they will come earlier and leave earlier…”, he wonders.

A new measure that could reduce the number of customers. But the decision is assumed by the town hall of Paris and its climate deputy, Dan Lert, who is seeking to save 10% of energy, or 10 million euros less on the bill. “It’s not going to spoil the influence of the city and I think that Parisians and traders are increasingly understanding the interest of these measures,” he said.

Thomas, this bar owner, says he is understanding, but offers another solution: “Perhaps it should be turned off at the weekend at the usual times, but during the week, there are fewer people going out, it’s not is not necessarily necessary to leave it on so late.”

For the moment, no return date has been announced.
